Custom applications often require distinct enzyme solutions for efficient bioconversion reactions. EUCODIS Bioscience offers to screen and identify novel enzymes for your target reaction e.g. in a feasibility study based on a selection of candidate enzymes from own enzyme collections and through database screening. For this purpose, suitable screening assays will be established, following Frances H. Arnold’s “first law of random mutagenesis: You get what you screen for” (Acc. Chem. Res. (1998), volume 31, page 125 131.)
Therefore EUCODIS Bioscience will first set up selective high throughput screening assays for custom substrates and reactions. Potential microorganisms, enzyme candidates or enzyme libraries will then be expressed, isolated and tested using the established screening assays. The desired enzyme parameters like activity, selectivity or reaction kinetics can then be confirmed using HPLC-MS or GC-MS analytics for lead enzyme candidates.

Biocatalytic conversions involve isolated enzymes or whole cell biocatalysts to transform a substrate molecule into the desired product, while biofermentations use living cells (“cell factories”) to convert or produce the desired target molecules.

Depending on the different applications in pharma, cosmetics, fine chemistry, textile chemistry or food and feed, we will develop customized solutions for liquid, dry or immobilized enzyme formulations with process- and application compatible buffers and additives for maximum activity and stability.
Immobilized biocatalysts are developed e.g. using hydrophobic resins for adsorption of the respective enzyme or using chemically activated resins for covalent immobilization. Absorbed enzymes are later often applied in reactions using organic solvents, while a covalent immobilization will prevent increased leaching of the enzyme in aqueous environments. A close collaboration with Resindion, a Mitsubishi Chemicals company, allows EUCODIS Bioscience access to novel resin formulations and large-scale capacities for immobilization in ton-scale fulfilling all industrial quality requirements.
